A series of ten webinars suitable for students aged around 11/12+ through to 14/15.
In this block of sessions, we will be studying a variety of genres, including letters, articles, speeches, journal entries, biographies, interview transcripts, news reports, travelogues and descriptive writing. We will discuss the key features of style, structure, tone and form of these different text types. Each week, we will read and analyse a particular text type, discussing use of language and how writers employ literary techniques, figurative language and imagery, precise vocabulary, structural elements and features of form, syntax and register to create effective pieces. This will, in turn, foster students’ ability to use language confidently and effectively when writing their own pieces.
Each lesson will be accompanied by an optional writing task for students to consolidate their learning.
A variety of supplementary resources will be provided including links to relevant articles, news reports, websites and documentaries to give students the opportunity to broaden their reading and build their knowledge of effective writing as well as extend their vocabulary and their technical skills through the use of accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation. We will also discuss the importance of audience and purpose when writing and reading. All the sessions are designed to develop students’ understanding and core skills.
Additional resources and the optional written task for students to work through in their own time will be available via Google Classroom.
